A Generation of Orphans is a half-hour documentary that gives voice to six orphans in Africa and the grassroots organizations working valiantly on their behalf — highlighting their hardship, hope and courage as they struggle with the loss of their parents to AIDS. This is the second film in a trilogy about the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s work to support grandmothers, orphans and women in sub-Saharan Africa.
Support for Africa’s AIDS orphans:
Thirteen million children have been orphaned by AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa alone. In many African countries, 10-15% of the total population will be orphaned by the year 2010. As the pandemic intensifies, we are seeing a growing number of child-headed households in which children as young as eight assume the tremendous burden of caring for younger siblings.
Since 2003, SLF has supported more than 270 grassroots projects in 15 sub-Saharan African countries. We assist orphans and other AIDS affected children in every possible way, from the payment of school fees to the provision of food. Read more about our projects here.
(NOTE: Statistics featured in A Generation of Orphans were drawn from the 2006 UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic, and from the 2006 UNAIDS Epidemic Update).
Distribution:
In many places, people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS continue to face stigma and discrimination. For this reason, the film is not intended for distribution or purchase within Africa. The children profiled courageously agreed to share their stories with a North American audience, with the understanding that the film would not be shown in their home countries.
